About Lovejoy UMC
Our HistoryLovejoy United Methodist Church was founded in 1888 and sits near the crossroads of Lackey Rd. and Hwy. 36 in Newton County. Its small, beautiful sanctuary embodies the charm and warmth of a countryside community church. And while Lovejoy has a rich history of having served as a center for faith, growth and worship for many generations of people, our vision and focus is based upon the present and the future. Our purpose as a church and church family can be best described in our Mission Statement: “To Know Christ, To Make Him Known, and To Love as He Loves.”
We know succeeding in this mission will draw us closer to God and each other. And, we believe that is God’s call upon our lives.
Our church offers a nursery, and Sunday School classes for children, youth and adults. We presently have three (3) Sunday school classes (brief descriptions, below).
Allan Morris Sunday School Class:Named after the late Allan Morris, a former member and Sunday school teacher at Lovejoy, this class includes a wide, diverse range of ages. Classes are creative and organic – ranging from Bible board games to discussions on our interactions with one another and the modern world. Discussions are candid, honest and encouraged.
Phyllis Gravitt Sunday School Class:Named in honor of former pastor Richard Gravitt’s late wife Phyllis, this class is taught in rotation by members of the class. In addition to the study of scripture, time is devoted to tackling tough topics and discussion of current problems and challenges affecting individuals, families and communities.
